"CONTINUING THE JAPANESE AMERICAN TRADITION"

Since the early 1900s, First and second generation  Japanese Americans transformed their expertise of farming into the successful art of creating and nurturing gardens all along the West Coast of the United States.

The rise of the Japanese American Gardener arose from turmoil and hard times amongst racial prejudice. During WWII many Japanese Americans were forced into relocation camps, leaving behind any previous livelihoods they once had. Once these Japanese Americans were released from the relocation camps at the end of the war, the majority of them had little to nothing to return to. It was during this time that they relied on their heritage for support.

There should be no surprise that the first and second generation Japanese Americans had an extensive history of farming. Through their farming, they established key traits within their culture, such as continually striving for excellence and the idea of hard work. At the end of the war many Japanese Americans found refuge in gardening, taking their knowledge of farming and turning it into the art of gardening. The labor intensive job of gardening was not the first choice of employment for most Japanese Americans but it was often the only choice due to social stigmas at the time. Plans of going to college or becoming a businessman had to be put on hold because racial issues had shut the door on such opportunities. It was also helpful that gardening was inexpensive to get into as well as highly sought after by West Coast Homeowners. The ability to turn functional gardening into an area of beauty with Zen-like qualities became highly appealing to homeowners.  The Japanese-American gardener was a major factor in helping rebuild the Japanese-American communities all along the West Coast. During the 1970’s, around 8,000 gardeners could be found supporting roughly 20% of Japanese-American families throughout Southern California.

The same cannot be said today however, with many gardening jobs now falling into the hands of Latino gardeners. Many of the Japanese-American gardeners who established the profession are now retiring. With the social & racial issues now lifted from them, many of these Japanese-American gardeners find their children moving on to other professions, leaving no-one to carry on the art.

Groundworks aims to carry on the heritage of the Japanese-American Gardener within the greater Los Angeles area. Our drive for excellence and pursuit of perfection can be seen in the work we provide our clients. At Groundworks, the tradition of detailed and hard work is alive and well as we make it our goal to create not only functional gardens, but places of peaceful beauty within nature.

  • Industry studies have shown that during the lifetime of a professionally designed, installed and maintained garden, 80% of the cost will be in the maintenance.  Many times, we experience clients who have invested tens and even hundreds of thousands of dollars in their garden just to have their trusty gardener mow and blow their garden back into a malnourished and improperly maintained property.

Tree Care Services Overview

Tree trimming when done right will promote healthy growth and allow the tree to grow as directed by the way in which the tree trimming is done. Tree trimming is also consider very dangerous work.
